How To Change Rear Breaks
Brakes are the most vital parts of any moving vehicle. They offer friction and help in speed control. Faulty brake systems must be diagnosed properly and vehicle owners must take special care in the change of rear braking system. As the engine drives the rear wheel for forward motion of the vehicle therefore the rear brakes play an important role in the whole braking system of any vehicle.
You can easily change rear break and with appropriate tools and machinery change of rear brakes can be done at home. Some of the tools required are given below:
Vice grip pliers
Hydraulic jacks
C-clamps
Lubricating oil
Screw drivers
Spanners of desired sizes
1: Firstly you should block the front wheels of the vehicle and make sure that the car doesn’t roll.
2: Then with the help of hydraulic jack support lift the rear end of the vehicle. Use the jack stand and make sure that both the rear ends are properly supported.
3: Then remove the wheels of both left and right sides of the vehicle and place them somewhere on the floor.
4: The braking system has drum brakes on the rear side and can be removed very easily. In some vehicles in order to change rear break you first have to remove the dust cap, cotton pins and some nuts which hold the drum in its place.
5: After removing the drums off its place you can see the braking mechanism inside. The whole braking system consists of an adjuster, a wheel cylinder and springs. The adjuster tightens the brakes and the braking pressure is applied by the wheel cylinder. The springs keep the brake shoes in their retracted position during non-braking.
6: Now with help of vice grip pliers remove the springs in order to create the necessary slack. After removing the springs, the brake shoes can now be easily removed. Use a brake cleaner and clean everything thoroughly and lubricate the friction points.
7: Now change rear breaks which are also called as the drums and replace the old ones with brand new ones. Replacing the drums at equal intervals can make your brake shoes last longer.
8: After you put in the brake shoes, you will need to hold the shoes in their original place. This can be done by using c-clamps.
9: Stretch the springs and reassemble the brakes on both sides and also tighten all the lug nuts and bolts. Refer the repair manual guide for your assistance.
10: Now get into your vehicle and drive slowly in a safe place to check the working of your new drums. They might not work well for first few times but with few forward and backward stops, the shoes get adjusted and then you are ready to go. Make sure to visit a mechanic to have complete assurance of your rear brake replacement.
